TLP550 is an optocoupler or an optical isolator designed and manufactured by Toshiba Electronics. Main purpose of an optocoupler is transfer digital signal between two circuits whilst electrically isolating before said two circuits. Optocouplers achieve this by optical means. One side of the optocoupler consist of a light source usually a LED is used. Other side consist of some type of optical receiver. So, when the input signal is connected to the input LED it will transmit the signal to the output optical receiver by optical means without using electrical connection between the input and output. There are several types of optocouplers classified by the receiver type and the feedback capabilities. TLP550 is line driver output type optocoupler which means TLP550 can generate actual signal in it’s output pin without any external component. TLP550 is recommended to use in feedback control of SMPS (Switch mode power supplies) and inverter circuits. TLP550 comes in 8 pin DIP package. You can see the pinout of the TLP550 in below image.
Lets identify some of the key features of the TLP550 optocoupler IC.
● 2500V RMS maximum isolation capabilities between input and output sides
● TTL signal conversion capabilities
● Low conversion times (falling edge – 5us and rising edge 6us)
● 25mA continuous forward current and 20mA pulse forward current LED
● -5V to 15V wide range of supply input voltage.
As mentioned earlier TLP550 is used for feedback applications of SMPS and inverters. Zero crossing detection of an AC mains voltage is also important in such application. Fallowing circuit diagram shows simple AC 220V zero crossing detection circuit using TLP550.
In this circuit 220V AC signal is directly applied to the input LED in series with a 51k resistor to protect the input LED from over current and over voltage. You can calculate the value of this resistor using Ohm’s law equation. When the input is connected, we can get the output digital signal from the output pin directly. A 10k resistor as pullup resistor to reduce any noise and floating signals. You should be careful to not to touch the input side of the TLP550 when the circuit is live as it involves mains voltage and it can be lethal.
